The American Medical Association officially designated Phlebology (the medical study and treatment of vein disease) as a distinct medical subspecialty in November 2005. We are proud to announce that our medical director, Peter Benson, M.D. was the first physician in the United States officially recognized by the AMA as a Registered Phebology Specialist or Phebologist.
The first board-certification exam in Phlebology was given in 2008. Dr. Benson was in the very first group of physicians to take the 2008 board-certification examination in Phlebology. Just 247 physicians passed the test that year. There are currently still just 612 board-certified Phlebology specialists in the United States.
